After trailing by as much as 16 points in the second half, the Adamson Soaring Falcons surged back to defeat the De La Salle University Green Archers, 75-74, to capture their second win in the UAAP Season 78 second round of eliminations at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon city.
After containing La Salle’s lead to three, 37-34, at halftime, the Falcons slipped in a 16-point hole as they let the Archers start the quarter on a backbreaking 20-7 run. Sensing urgency, Adamson chipped the lead to 11, 59-48, at the end of the third period thanks to a 7-2 rally to close the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, courtesy of the scoring triumvurate of Joseph Nalos, Pape Sarr and Jerome Garcia, Adamson unleashed a 20-9 rally that tied the game at 68-all at the 3:38 minute mark– the first deadlock of the game since the first period.
Thomas Torres and Nico Capote then exchanged crucial three-pointers that followed another exchange of baskets courtesy of Pape Sarr and Prince Rivero layups that then tied the game for the final time at 73-all.
Sarr was then fouled attempting a layup at the 15-second mark and went on to sink two free throws that would prove to be the game-winning points of the game. Rivero was fouled and went to the charity stripe at the 8.5 second mark but only converted one to hand the Archers the loss.
Import Pape Sarr led the upset with a double-double effort of 23 points and 14 rebounds while Joseph Nalos contributed 20 points and six assists for the Falcons who also got timely contributions from Jerome Garcia who scored 13 points.
Prince Rivero had his best game of the season with a double-double performance of 23 points and 11 rebounds in a losing effort for the Archers who also drew an all-around effort from King Archer Jeron Teng who had 22 points, five rebounds and seven assists.
