Akhuetie powers Perpetual comeback against JRU in double-OT thriller

Powered by Bright Akhuetie, the University of Perpetual Help- Dalta Altas outlasted the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers in double overtime, 89-80, in the second round of eliminations of NCAA Season 92, Friday afternoon, at the Filoil Flying V center in San Juan.

With JRU leading by four points with two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Bombers main man Teytey Teodoro buried a three-pointer to put Perpetual in 64-57 with 1:30 remaining in regulation. JRU looked poised to win but Perpetual, thanks to an Akhuetie basket, a Daryl Singontiko fastbreak layup and a Genmar Ilagan three-pointer, came back to tie the game with 23 seconds remaining. Teodoro had a chance to seal the win in regulation but his step-back mid-range jumpshot missed.

It was a seesaw affair in both overtime periods with both teams answering basket by basket. In the first overtime, after Akhuetie tied the game with 8 seconds remaining, Teodoro again wanted to play hero but missed horribly on a tough right corner fadeaway three-point attempt.

In double overtime, the Nigerian Akhuetie carried the Altas on his back and was unstoppable as he scored on six straight points. He outscored the Bombers 7-6 in the final overtime.

Akuetie finished with 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting to go along with 18 rebounds while Singontiko hit big shots for the Altas and tallied 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Lanky forward Gab Dagangon chipped in 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
