STA ROSA, Laguna – Tanduay Alab Pilipinas suffered another home loss this time against the Singapore Slingers, 97-83, in the 8th Season of the ASEAN Basketball League at the Sta. Rosa Multipurpose Sports Complex in Laguna.
The visitors, led by world imports Xavier Alexander and Ryan Wright, showed Alab its shooting prowess as they shot an impressive 11-of-22 three-point field goals and finished 49% overall field goals.
With the Slingers leading by as much as 14 points early in the third quarter, Josh Urbiztondo and Ivan Johnson sparked a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to 72-71 before the end of the third quarter. But the Slingers capitalized on consecutive Alab turnovers and used their hot shooting to start the fourth quarter with a 23-4 run and take the biggest lead of the game, 95-75 and practically put an end on Alab’s chances of winning the game.
Down 0-2 early in the season, Tanduay Alab Pilipinas head coach Jimmy Alapag could only point to one person accountable for the team’s early struggles. “I take the blame for this. I got to be better for the team” said an apologetic Alapag. “I got to put the guys in a better position to win the game. To go out there and play to their strengths so we could get the win” he added.
Xavier Alexander led the Singapore Slingers, who now sports a 2-1 win-loss record, with a triple-double as he tallied 27 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists. He added 4 steals. Ryan Wright backed him up with 24 points and 18 rebounds. HanBin Ng and former PBA player AJ Mandani also performed well for the Slingers as the two combined for 7 of the team’s 11 three-point field goals and they contributed 18 and 17 points respectively.
Reggie Okosa once again led Alab Pilipinas with his 24 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks while fellow import Ivan Johnson tallied 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Ray Parks and Josh Urbiztondo led the locals with 14 and 11 points respectively.
Tanduay Alab Pilipinas will next face HK Eastern Basketball Team on December 13 as they try to avenge their opening day loss on Hong Kong soil.
