In a game where they led end-to-end, the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles kicked off their UAAP Season 80 campaign with a win over the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 85-65, Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay city.
Ateneo started the game strong with an 8-0 blast in the first quarter and never looked back from there as they pushed the lead to as much as 22 points. Adamson would manage to cut the deficit the nine points in the fourth period but it would be the closest they could come.
Eagles big man Chi Ikeh took advantage of a Papi Sarr-less Falcons as he asserted his towering frame and tallied a double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds. Last year’s Mythical Five member Thirdy Ravena also capitalized on Adamson’s glaring hole as he produced a double-double as well scattering 20 markers and grabbing 10 boards.
Young sharpshooter Jolo Mendoza also was instrumental in the win as he scored 14 on an efficient 4-of-6 shooting clip.
For the Falcons, rookie wing Kurt Lojera led the team in scoring with 11 markers along with three steals after the Eagles held star guards Rob Manalang and Jerrick Ahanmisi to six and nine points respectively on a combined 6-of-24 shooting.
Adamson will try to bounce back versus the UST Growling Tigers on September 16, Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum while Ateneo’s next assignment will be the UP Fighting Maroons on September 13, Wednesday also at the Araneta Coliseum.
