Manila – The UAAP Men’s Volleyball champion Ateneo Blue Spikers remained undefeated (5-0) after winning over the tough NCAA champion Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-21,20-25,25-23,25-23, on Wednesday in the Spikers Turf Collegiate Conference Quarterinals at The Arena in San Juan.
Marck Espejo led the blue spikers with 25 points, while Ysay Marasigan chipped in 12 points, and Ivan Villanuava had 11.
On the other hand, Howard Mojica carried EAC throughout the game, finishing with a game-high 41 points, but did not get much from his teammates to seal a much-wanted victory.
“I expect Mojica to have a monster game”, commented Ateneo Coach Oliver Almadro.
“We needed this game so we can prepare for our next games in the quarterfinals”, he added, when asked about a tough match given to them by EAC.
EAC started fast in the third set, but Ateneo catched up courtesy of Espejo and took advantage of EAC’s service errors to tie the set at 17.
Both teams exchanged points, but Ateneo got the momentum after a net touch error from EAC which paved Espejo to score the last points for Ateneo.
In the fourth set, the exchange of points continued as Mojica remained unstoppable for EAC, while Espejo and Villanueva fired back for Ateneo.
EAC still has a chance to catch up in the end after a rotation error by Ateneo, cutting the lead to one, 24-23. But Ysay Marasigan was able to score and finish the game for Ateneo at 25-23.
