Tyler Tio’s three pointer with 17.3 seconds left in the game helped the Blue Eagles prevail over Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights, 78-76, in the 11th season of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup tournament Sunday afternoon at San Juan’s Filoil Flying V Arena.
Down by two with less than a minute left, the former Xavier Golden Stallion dribbled past his defender on top of key then unleashed the game-winning three forcing Letran to call a timout. In the ensuing play, Jeo Ambohot turned the ball over after receiving a pass from Rey Nambatac forcing the Knights to foul Asistio. Anton Asistio’s split from the charity gave a chance to the Knights to tie the game but Bong Quinto’s layup in the final second was way off preserving the win for the Blue Eagles.
The win improved Ateneo’s standing to 2-2.
Tio, who missed the UAAP season last year due to lack of citizenship papers, topscored for the Blue Eagles with 17 points on 5/9 3-point FGs. Thirdy Ravena backed him up with 15 points and 6 rebounds.
Rey Nabatac was the lone double-digit scorer for Letran with 25 points.
