MANILA – Just when the relentless FEU Lady Tamaraws squad threatened to extend the Best-of-Three semi-finals series on Wednesday at the 13th Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference, a familiar hero showed up for the young Ateneo Lady Eagles team.
Katipunan skyscraper Bea de Leon rallied Ateneo in the crucial stretches of the match to get past the Lady Tamaraws in four sets, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23.
With the teams tied with one set apiece and with the scores too close for comfort, Ateneo star playmaker Jia Morado went to the junior middle blocker in the latter parts of the third set. De Leon certainly did not disappoint as she emphatically converted three successive quick attack points in the third set to get them to set point.
Her inspired play continued in the fourth set to create the separation between the Lady Eagles and the Lady Tamaraws.
De Leon finished the game with 20 points in 14 attacks, four blocks, and two service aces.
Morado tallied a game-high 54 excellent sets, while team captain Michelle Morente posed big numbers in her all-around play with 12 points, 16 excellent digs, and 16 excellent receptions.
Ateneo’s sweep in the semis showdown is considered a big upset as they eliminated top-seed FEU in the tournament.
Lady Tams Toni Rose Basas and Remy Palma put up a gallant stand for the Morayta-based squad with 17 and 13 points, respectively.
The victory on Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena formalizes the entry of the Lady Eagles in the SVL Finals against the NU Lady Bulldogs
