After being up by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags extinguished a scorching Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals squad looking for a come-from-behind win, 87-78, in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premer Cup at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.
Down by 20 at the start of the fourth quarter, 75-55, the Generals, courtesy of a full-court trap, trimmed the lead to seven points with 44 seconds remaining after a Hamadou Laminou fastbreak dunk capped the EAC run.
It would be the closest they could come, however, as Michael Calisaan and the Stags proved to be too much for the Generals.
Calisaan led the way for Baste as he tallied 25 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
“Yung bandanag patapos po kasi ng game medyo nag-panic kami e kasi nag-trap sila,” said Calisaan.
San Sebastian Head Coach Egay Macaraya lamented his squad’s almost collapse: “I’m always adressing this to the boys: I want them to learn how to win– but in wanting to win, parang napre-pressure pa din sila especially in the fourth quarter.”
“Basketball is all about runs, nag-make lang ng run, nag-panic na. Hopefully in the next time matututo kami manalo talaga– everytime, every quarter.” Macaraya added.
Regile Ilagan also chipped in with 18 points and four assists for the Stags who are now 2-2 in the win-loss column in Group A.
For EAC meanwhile, monster double-double efforts from Laminuo who had 20 points and 16 rebounds along with six blocks and Sydney Onwubere who tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds proved to be in vain in a losing effort as the Generals now drop to 0-3.
