Headed by CJ Perez, the Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates scored a victory over the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, 90-89, in the opening day of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Premier Cup, Monday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V center.
Perez, in his first major tournament in three years after transferring from San Sebastian then to Ateneo, tallied 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jaycee Marcelino, another transferee who came from Adamson, chipped in 14 points in 18 minutes.
The Pirates controlled the game early on and led for most of the match and led by as much as 11 points until the final quarter. Ateneo came roaring back however with a 16-4 rally courtesy of three-pointers from Mike Nieto, Gian Mamuyac and Anton Asistio. The Eagles had a chance to win in the final possession but Nieto three-pointer failed to go in.
Mike Nieto finished with 17 markers and eight boards while Thirdy Ravena ended up with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Lyceum will next face Letran on May 10, 5 pm while Ateneo’s next assignment will be UST on May 5, 1 pm.
