College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers pulled off an upset on San Sebastian Lady Stags, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, and 25-13, to hand them their first loss of the season in Game 1 of the NCAA Season 91 Women’s Volleyball Finals yesterday.
After losing in the first set, 24-26, the Lady Blazers grabbed their momentum in the succeeding sets while taking advantage of the errors thrown by San Sebastian.
Jeanette Panaga led the rally with 23 points, from 9 attacks, eight blocks and six aces while Janine Navarro chipped-in 19 points.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Blazers worked to have a six-point lead cushion, 9-3, which then magnified to 21-9 followed by two aces by Panaga to end the match.
The San Sebastian Lady Stags have a thrice-to-beat advantage after sweeping the eliminations, only to be beaten in the Game 1 of the Finals series.
Baste’s star spiker Gretchel Soltones powered 27 points and was the only player to post double for the team, while the rest combined for 24.
CSB celebrated with 10 blocks and 12 aces while San Sebastian only had 6 blocks and 2 aces in the losing effort.
