Davao to host Ironman 70.3 in 2018

After the announcement of a full distance IRONMAN to be held in the country and the return of IRONMAN 70.3 Asia Pacific Championship next year, Sunrise Events Inc. made another announcement over the weekend that will surely make 2018 a banner year for Philippine triathlon. Davao is set to host the ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 as IRONMAN marks its first-ever race in Mindanao on March 25, 2018.

Triathletes from around the world are set to experience a one of a kind race as they will traverse Davao’s fusion of nature and urban infrastructure. The race begins with a 1.9Km swim at the beautiful property development if Azuela Cove where the transition area will be located. Participants then head to the main highway for the 90Km bike, which will be a single-loop course that heads all the way to the turnaround point at Tagum City. The 21Km run will be a 2-loop course where participants will enjoy the flat roads of J.P. Laurel Avenue towards the Abreeza commercial district of Davao City. The finish line will be at the Azuela Soccer Field.

“It is always exciting for us to announce the addition of a new event – especially in the Philippines where the enthusiasm of the IRONMAN community is exceptional.” said IRONMAN Asia Managing Director Geoff Meyer. “We launched IRONMAN Philippines in August and sold out entries in one day. We hope for such to continue that tremendous response as we open registrations of ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao on October 1.” Meyer adds.

Davao’s hosting of IRONMAN coincides with the 10th year anniversary of the first IRONMAN event in the Philippines.

Sunrise Events Inc. President and CEO Wilfred Steven Uytengsu is optimistic that the new IRONMAN location in the Philippines will further enhance the growth of the sport especially in Mindanao. “We at Sunrise Events are excited to be offering a brand-new race in another part of the country next year. Davao will be our next destination for an IRONMAN 70.3 race and we believe this will be well received by the local and foreign triathletes alike.” said Uytengsu. “We are encouraged by the enthusiasm Davao has expressed in hosting us and I expect we will see this race steadily grow.” Uytengsu adds.

Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte has also welcomed IRONMAN to her city. “We are very pleased to host the IRONMAN 70.3 in Davao starting in 2018. The 2018 ALVEO IRONMAN 70.3 Davao will offer a $15,000 purse and 30 qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa. General registration will open on October 1, 2017.
