After being down big early, the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles defeated the Nationaul University (NU) Bulldogs 66-54 in the third place game of the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan, Sunday.

The Eagles were down by as much as 14 points in the second quarter at 24-10 but a blistering 26-2 run turned the game in their favor to finish the first half in the lead at 36-26. The Bulldogs would never recover as they never trimmed the lead to as low as eight points.

“Our players picked it up, credit to them, They picked up the intensity and also they picked it up with their teamwork also, they picked it up offensively and defensively,” said Assistant Coach Sandy Arespacochaga of the comeback run.

Chi Ikeh led Ateneo with a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds while Vince Tolentino contributed 15 points and four rebounds. Thirdy Ravena also chipped in big as he almost had a double-double of his own with 14 points and nine rebounds to go along with two assists.

“From losing maybe 70% of our offense with Kiefer (Ravena), Von (Pessumal), Gwyne (Capacio) and Fonso (Gotladera) and then losing other of our talented teammates, we’re very happy with our finish here in the Filoil Cup,” said Arespacochaga, who was tasked head coaching duties as Ateneo Head Coach Tab Baldwin is currently in Greece with the Gilas Pilipinas National team.

“We’re happy with the improvement that we see from players and the players we expected to step up and it’s also very nice for us to see different players step up for us in the different games of the Filoil Cup so we’re hoping this would be a big pushoff for us towards our preparation in the UAAP,” added Arespacochaga.

For NU, none of the Bulldogs scored in double figures as they were led in scoring by Chino Mosqueda with nine points while import Alfred Aroga was held to just eight points and eight rebounds.
