Mall of Asia Arena – The Far Eastern University Tamaraws are an inch-closer to getting the much coveted Men’s basketball title after dominating Game 1 of the best-of-three Finals, 75-70, against the National University Bulldogs.
Mike Tolomia led the squad with 15 points along seven rebounds, while Roger Pogoy chipped-in 14 points—thanks to a third quarter explosion which helped escape deadlock at 40-all—inviting the crowd to an RR Pogoy show after posting back-to-back-to-back baskets, to overtake the Bulldogs at 47-41.
NU was leading 10 points in the second period, 30-20, before FEU stopped the momentum with a 9-0 swing to stay on track at 29-30, followed by a series of exchange of baskets from Gelo Alolino of NU and Anthony Hargrove of FEU to close the first half, 35-38, in favor of NU.
The green-and-gold squad had the momentum swing to their advantage as the opening period of the second half had them score 25 points against NU’s only 12 points to close at 60-50, FEU.
In the deciding period, Jeth Rosario left the game in the 4th after clutches his knee. Alfred Aroga and Gelo Alolino of NU were the only ones moving as they combined 14 points of the team’s 20 point, while Achie Inigo powered 8 of the team’s 15 points, coming from six freebies and a jumper to end the match at 75-70.
NU big man Alfred Aroga led all-scorers with 17 points, while Gelo Alolino put up 12 markers.
