Mountain bikers from all over the country will once again gather for a weekend of non-stop trail action as Filinvest is set to stage the fifth edition of Endurance Weekend happening this September 30 – October 1 at the trails of Filinvest City Alabang in Muntinlupa City.
This annual round-the-clock race summons not only the best Mountain Bikers in the country but as well as ultra-cycling enthusiasts who want to experience non-stop biking action in what is considered the best bike trail in the metropolis. Participants are set complete an approximately 5Km lap consisting of boulders, hills, and grasslands, where they will complete as many laps as they can in the 24, 12, and 6 hour categories. Per category, a minimum of 24, 12, and 6 laps (for the 24, 12, and 6 hour categories respectively) are needed for a participant to earn a finisher’s medal.
Filinvest City will once again host what is considered the toughest cycling event in the metro. Filinvest City, a 244-hectare property down south is a fully integrated and self-contained community, divided into districts to provide a balanced mix of developments. It is a residential haven, business central, leisure destination, learning and education zone, and medical and wellness hub. It also is a destination for Mountain Bikers as it houses one of the scenic mountain bike trails in Metro Manila which makes it a perfect venue to stage Endurance Weekend.
Don Mari Ubaldo, Filinvest Senior Assistant VP and Project Head, expects around 500 participants to join this year.
While the task of finishing the race seem daunting, Endurance Weekend welcomes not only experienced Mountain Bikers but newbies as well. Cross Country Mountain Bike Coach Donjie Dormitorio, a regular participant of the Filinvest Endurance Weekend, claims that the event is not really a race but more of a ‘test-your-will’ experience with fellow MTB enthusiasts. “Filinvest Endurance Weekend is a race that is something that you don’t train for. It’s something that you just want to try yourself.” says Coach Donjie.
“Actually in the Philippines, nobody really knows how to do this race yet.” says Coach Donjie, father of MTB teenage phenom and Cross Country champion Ariana Dormitorio. But this year, Coach Donjie anticipates a more competitive atmosphere as he expects the participants to have already learned from previous Endurance Weekend races.
Aside from the competitive side of the event, Race Director Neville Manaois is optimistic that the spirit of camaraderie between the competitors will again be at an all-time high. Filinvest City Endurance Weekend will again provide areas in the event where teams and supporters can camp and setup tents. “Every year this event has been very festive. And that’s the target really. To bring the MTB community together.” said Manaois. “At the start, everybody looks competitive but next thing you’ll see is that riders are already sharing drinking bottles, food and tent. Even for the solo riders, some teams even adopt them. And that’s how this kind of event brings the community closer.” stresses Manaois.
