SINGAPORE – Gina Iniong suffered a huge setback in her quest for ONE Championship women’s title as she was dealt with a Unanimous Decision loss against Mei Yamaguchi last night at ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT at Singapore Indoor Stadium.
Taking advantage of the offer to fight Yamaguchi two weeks ago as a replacement to ONE Atomweight champion Angela Lee, Iniong seemed to have the advantage in the early goings but the 28-year old fighter from Baguio struggled with Yamaguchi’s grappling superiority even bringing her close to submission at the end of round 2. Iniong seemingly ran out of gas in the third as she just kept on defending herself from Yamaguchi’s blows.
Angela Lee supposedly will defend her title in her country but suffered a major car accident that relegated her to the injury list of ONE Championship.
Yamaguchi’s win solidified her number one contender spot for the ONE Championship atomweight title. “I want to fight Lee next” she immediately said after the match. “I will wait for her to come back after her injury.” she added.
Gina’s loss snapped her 3-fight win streak and brought her MMA record to 6 wins and three losses.
Earlier, another Filipino suffered defeat as Richard Corminal lost to Asian martial arts veteran Arnaud “The Game” LePont via Arm Triangle submission in the first round. The Malaysia-based Corminal is now 0-2 in ONE Championship and 4-3 overall in his MMA matches.
ONE Championship will have a banner year next year in the Philippines as ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced that there will be 24 ONE Championship Events next year, 4 of which will be held in Manila.
