Thanks to the hot-shooting of RK Ilagan, the San Sebastian College- Recoletos Stags defeated the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 77-69, to increase their winning streak to four in the second round of eliminations of NCAA Season 92, Tuesday afternoon, at the Filoil Flying V center in San Juan.
The rookie Ilagan bucked an uninspiring first half where he scored only two points on a 1-of-5 shooting clip to explode for 23 points via seven three-pointers in the second to finish with 25 points and 4 rebounds.
“He’s a rookie but he’s hardworking and has a big heart,” said Stags head coach Egay Macaraya of his young gunner, who was two points shy of his career-high 27 points.
San Sebastian clamped down on Lyceum as they forced the Pirates to 23 turnovers compared to their eight– the lowest any NCAA team has had this season.
“I guess everybody wanted to win,” said Macaraya on the turnover output. “Everybody stepped up and everybody played defense.”
Jerick Fabian chipped in 12 points via three three-pointers along with five rebounds for the Stags while lead point guard Ryan Costelo was notable as well despite scoring only four points as he dished out 10 assists.
For the Pirates, Mike Nzeusseu was the lone man scoring double figures with 24 points and 19 rebounds. They have now dropped to 5-8 in the standings.
On the other hand, the Stags are now one of the hottest teams in the league after winning against powerhouse squads Perpetual, San Beda and Mapua to start their streak. They now stand at 5-9 and have a lot of ground to make up if they want to sneak into the Final Four race.
