MANILA – People say height is might. True. But when height is coupled with superb skills and will to win, that’s close to unstoppable.
Jaja Santiago towered everyone else on Monday at the Philsports Arena when the NU Lady Bulldogs soared past the Ateneo Lady Eagles in five sets, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 25-18, 18-16.
The Lady Bulldogs skipper recorded a whooping 31 points in 25 attacks, five blocks, and one block.
When Santiago headed out of the rotation in the latter part of the fifth set, it was Aiko Urdas who took over. She finished the match with 18 points.
The Lady Bulldogs victory spoiled the debut match of come-backing Ateneo superstar Jhoana Maraguinot.
Maraguinot scored nine points in the game after being out most of the tournament due to a stress fracture on her left leg.
Meanwhile, Ateneo team captain Michelle Morente tallied her second triple-double performance in the conference. The energetic volleybelle finished with 14 points, 11 excellent digs, and 13 excellent receptions.
The rematch of last year’s finals continues on Wednesday as the Lady Bulldogs will try to secure their second championship in a row at the 13th Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference.
