MANILA — It was another day at the office for the current league leader in setting and serving.
The Ateneo Lady Eagles fired from all cylinders on Saturday the Smart Araneta Coliseum, credits to their setter Jia Morado. The skipper tallied a game-high 38 excellent sets and five points, including the set point via a service ace in the second set and the match point through dump ball on the corner of the front row.
With Ateneo’s offense executed to perfection, the UP Lady Maroons struggled to establish their rhythm and momentum in the game. The Lady Eagles downed their counterparts in three sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15.
Jhoana Maraguinot regained her lethal form with 17 points on 15 attacks and two service aces. Kat Tolentino added 10 points, while Michelle Morente had another all-around performance with nine points, 13 excellent digs, and six excellent receptions.
UP fought the challenge through in certain stretches of the match, but Ateneo was just too vicious in their attacks which allowed them to pull away. As a team, the Lady Eagles recorded 44 points on attacks, compared to UP’s 24 attack points.
Isa Molde and Tots Carlos combined for a total 15 points for the Lady Maroons, yet it was not enough to overcome the relentless offensive barrage of the Lady Eagles. Justine Dorog, who replaced graduating libero Pia Gaiser after her ACL injury, fared well with 10 excellent digs and 13 excellent receptions.
UP will try to halt their skid against the UE Lady Warriors on Wednesday, while Ateneo will slug it out against the UST Golden Tigresses on the same day at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
