JRU upsets defending champions La Salle in Filoil opener

With help from Tey Tey Teodoro’s 17 points, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers scored an upset over defending champions De La Salle Unviersity Green Archers, 85-81, in the first game of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Premier Cup, Monday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V center.

Teodoro’s 17 was backed up by forward Jed Mendoza’s 15 points, five rebounds and four assists for a Heavy Bombers team that led for most of the game.

Leading by nine, 81-72, with four minutes remaining in the game, JRU managed to fight off a late La Salle 9-2 rally that cut the lead to two, 83-81, with 1:43 remaining. Turnovers, missed shot and a Gio Lasquety jumper with 17 seconds left and an MJ Dela Virgen free throw though sealed the loss for the Green Archers.

Ben Mbala tallied 22 points,16 rebounds and two blocks while Aljun Melecio scored 11 and dished out five assists for a La Salle side that at times was lost on offense.

JRU will next face UE on May 7 at 1 pm while De La Salle will duke it out with Perpetual Help on the same day at 5 pm
