KYK, South Korea deal Philippines their second straight loss

The Kim Yeonkoung-led South Korean National Women’s Volleyball Team swept the Philippines to deliver the latter a second consecutive defeat, 25-23, 25-18, 25-12, in the 19th Asian Seniors Women’s Volleyball Champion at the Alonte Sports Arena, Sunday.

Kim Heejin led the scoring for the Koreans with 11 points, while team captain KYK had her longest stint in the tournament as she tallied nine markers in twelve attempts.

Alyssa Valdez towed PH to a great start. ‘The Phenom’ sent down a dagger to increase the lead to three, 10-7, in the second set.

KOR was quick to get back their composure as Yeonkoung fired an ace to regain the edge, 15-14.

The Pinay Spikers were not able to counter with the Koreans bucking off a slow start to take set 2.

KOR opened the third frame with a 5-0 blitz. They did not take their feet off the gas pedal as they built a double-digit lead, 19-9, on their way to a straight-set victory.

The Philippines showed grit in the first canto, pushing the set to a 25-23 wire-to-wire win for the Koreans.

6’5 Alyja Santiago was the lone Filipina volleybelle to score in double figures with 10 points. Valdez chipped in seven, while Kim Fajardo posted 26 excellent sets.
