Ateneo de Manila University  overcome another rally from Far Eastern University as the Lady Eagles knocked out the Lady Tamaraws in four thrilling sets, 25-22, 25-10, 16-25, 26-24, in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 79 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena, April 23.

Michelle Morente top scored for the Lady Eagles with 16 points, three from the service line. She also had 15 execellent digs, while the comebacking Jhoana Maraguinot had 14, including three off of service aces. Bea de Leon posted 12 markers, three from blocks.

“Sobrang nag-paid-off talaga lahat ng pinaghirapan namin”, Morente said.

With ADMU winning the first two sets, they later on found themselves trailing FEU by five, 14-19, after a drop ball from Gel Cayuna. FEU attacked Ateneo’s weakness in reception throughout the third frame and those service aces helped them stay alive in the game.

The Katipunan-based squad looked to finish it once and for all in the fourth canto as they quickly jumped to a, 10-4, edge. However, the spikers from Morayta kept on knocking on the Lady Eagles’ door, cutting the lead down to one, 16-15. The Blue side once again created enough breathing room in the latter part of the set, but the Lady Tams made another run to finally overtake ADMU 24-23. Unfortunately for FEU, they ran out of gas as Ateneo scored the last three points en route to their sixth straight finals appearance.

For Morado, it’s all about composure.

“Sabi ni coach we really had to calm ourselves lang, we had to meditate because if we stuck to the game plan, lahat naman ng ginagawa ng FEU napaghandaan na namin” Morado said, “yun lang talaga, we had to go back to the basics.”

Main gunner Bernadeth Pons tallied 14 points and 12 excellent receptions. while graduating player Remy Palma added 12 points, three from blocks.

Ateneo arranges another Finals match-up against La Salle. Game 1 will be on Saturday, April 29, 4pm at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
