University of Santo Tomas leaned on a pivotal second half to roar past De La Salle University, 77-61, in the UAAP Season 78 Men’s Basketball Division on Wednesday, at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay.
The come-from-behind win gave the Growling Tigers another ticket to the overall top berth, which they now share with fellow contender Far Eastern University, both with 5-6 cards.
UST had to find its way out of a 14-point hole first though, before the Tigers got their rhythm back to be just within a striking distance from La Salle at 33-31.
Instrumental moves from Kyle Suarez and Louie Vigil made the comeback attack possible for UST, as the duo sparked a 16-point romp that began to pull the rug from under La Salle midway through the third frame.
The toll has even become heavier for the Green Archers when team captain Kevin Ferrer still kept the fire burning for UST despite listing three fouls, and poured 12 points in the fourth period alone.
Ferrer finished with 17 points, followed by Karim Abdul with 13 markers and 13 boards for University of Santo Tomas. In addition, Ed Daquiaog chipped in 11 points for the Growling Tigers.
More so, the two key players of UST for this match namely Louie Vigil and Kyle Suarez combined for 19 kills, which is a huge outcome to begin with.
De La Salle University, on the other hand, evened its win-loss record at 3-3 despite Jeron Teng’s 13 markers and Joshua Torralba’s 12 points.
The Green Archers are expected to return to action against league archrival Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday.
