MANILA — The Lady Eagles continue to fly to greater heights.

Ateneo de Manila University scored their third straight win to improve to a 4-1 win-loss record in UAAP Season 79. They swept the UE Lady Warriors in straight sets on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21.

Michelle Morente displayed another all-around performance as she recorded 13 points along with nine excellent digs. Team skipper Jia Morado also proved to be a steady leader for the ladies from Katipunan as she tallied six points including four service aces and 35 excellent sets.

Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses gave credit to the team’s experienced setter for their early success in the tournament. “Magaling siya talagang mag-set play. Yun yung talagang pinag-aaralan niya rin.”

“Tsaka kilala niya yung mga spiker. Pagdating sa ensayo, talagang parang kinakabisado niya lahat eh. Si Jia talaga magdadala kapat mag crucial games,” the Ateneo mentor added.

UE tried to rally their cause in the early goings of each set with their steady blocking, but the creativity of the Lady Eagles on the offensive side was just too much for the Lady Warriors to handle.

As the Lady Eagles fired from all angles of the court and launched heavy serves all throughout the match, the Lady Warriors found themselves scrambling for the ball, even when their floor defense was anchored by libero standout Kath Arado who finished with 13 digs and 14 receptions.

Yet despite the sweep, Meneses gave credit to the feisty Lady Warriors team. “Pag tinignan mo young UE, talagang kapag di ka naglaro ng maganda, talagang lalaban kasi ang lalaki eh,” he shared.

Mary Ann Mendrez and skipper Shaya Adorador scored 11 points apiece for UE. They will once again lead the Lady Warriors in their search for the elusive first win on February 26, Sunday, against the defending champions De La Salle Lady Spikers.

Ateneo is also scheduled to battle the undefeated UP Lady Maroons on Sunday, 4pm.
