Opportunity knocks for Gina Iniong in her quest for ONE Championship women’s title

SINGAPORE – Barely two weeks after an impressive second round TKO victory over Indonesia’s Priscilla Hertati Lumbangaol in Manila, Gina “Conviction” Iniong is set to enter the ONE Championship cage again as she faces Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi in a three-round atomweight battle at ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT this Friday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

This will be a rematch for Iniong and Yamaguchi as the two first battled more than three years ago in Manila where Iniong earned a split decision over Yamaguchi.

The 28-year old fighter from Team Lakay Iniong accepted the offer to fill in for ONE Atomweight World Lee Angela Lee, who withdrew from her title defense against Yamaguchi after suffering injuries from an unfortunate car accident nearly two weeks ago. Iniong believes that her second meeting with Yamaguchi is a huge opportunity to earn a shot at the world title.

“Nakita ko yun opportunity eh kaya sabi rin ni Coach Mark (Sangiao) na lalaban kami.” Iniong said at the ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT press conference at the Marina Bay Sands. “Kakagaling ko lang naman din sa laban kaya alam na ensayado ako” she added.

A win and a title shot against Angela Lee in 2018 is what motivates Gina in her upcoming bout against Yamaguchi. When asked if she wanted to have a rematch with Yamaguchi at ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT immediately after her fight two weeks ago, she didn’t think twice. “Umoo po kaagad ako.” the soft-spoken Iniong confidently answered. “Alam ko kasi hindi malayong maglalaban ulit kami dahil pareho kaming division. At isang panalo na lang lalaban na ako sa championship” she added.

The Iniong-Yamaguchi rematch is one of the featured fights happening this Friday at ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT where Ben Askren will face Shinya Aoki for the ONE Welterweight World title at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
