Perpetual escapes Mapua on Cardinals’ homecourt

Despite a late Cardinals rally, the University of Perpetual Help Altas outlasted the Mapua University Cardinals, 63-60, in Thursday afternoon NCAA Season 93 on Tour action at the Mapua University Gym.

After leading by double digits in the second half, the Altas lost the lead after a Cardinals 15-2 surge to start the fourth quarter capped by an Almel Orquina basket that put the score at 51-54 at the 4:18 mark. Perpetual, however, leaned on veterans Genmar Ylagan, AJ Coronel, Keith Pido and Prince Eze to finish the game.

The towering center Eze, though, split two free throws with 13 seconds left that left the door open for Mapua, only down by three. The Cardinals could not convert though as Andoy Estrella’s desperation three pointer rimmed out while the sharpshooter Orquina’s attempt hit all board.

The team captain Ylagan paced the Altas with 13 points and two assists while Eze notched a double-double of 11 markers and 21 rebounds.

For the Cardinals, point guard Leo Gabo led the team with 12 points while the team’s top gunner Estrella was held to only 11 markers on 3-of-10 shooting along with four boards and four assists.

SCORES:

Perpetual: Ylagan 13, Eze 11, Singontiko 10, Coronel 10, Pido 9, Lucente 8, Dagangon 2, Yuhico 0, Tamayo 0

Mapua: Gabo 12, Estrella 11, Orquina 10, Victoria 9, Bunag 5, Aguirre 5, Raflores 4, Nieles 4.
