Pirates survive Generals, remain undefeated

Courtesy of CJ Perez and Jaycee Marcelino, the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates survived the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 97-93, in Thursday afternoon NCAA on Tour action at the EAC Gym.

After using a 12-0 rally to pull away and lead by as much as 13 points in the third quarter, the Pirates saw their lead dwindle to a single point, 83-82, at the 6:20 mark of the fourth period after a Francis Munsayac floater.

The Generals would keep it close until the final seconds and had a chance to tie the game with less 15 seconds remaining but a Munsayac turnover led to a wide open Jaycee Marcelino breakaway layup that proved to be the game sealing basket.

Marcelino was brilliant all game long as he finished with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals while Perez scored 20 of his own as well to go along with three boards and five dimes.

“Gusto ko lang manalo,” said Marcelino on his game winning steal against the Generals’ top guard Munsayac. “Ginawa ko lang talaga ‘yung best ko kasi lagi ko iniisip wala ng bukas ‘pag natalo (kami).”

For his part, Munsayac finished with 26 points on four three-pointers to go along with four assists to lead EAC while Jerome Garcia chipped in 19 markers and five rebounds.

Lyceum remains at the top of the standings with a now 7-0 record while the Generals drop to a record.
