Manila – Team Captain Rubilen Amit gathered her team coming into the fourth match as Team Asia doused cold water on Team West’s furious comeback to take home the AM8.com Queens Cup title at the Resorts World Manila.
Team Asia got off to a slow start that enabled Team West to even the score at 7-all. Karen Corr dominated right from the start as she single handedly brought her team from 3 matches down to tie the series playing in two singles matches and a double with Jennifer Barretta.
After losing three straight, the trio of Rubilen Amit, Siming Chen and Jennifer Chen buckled down to work as they beat Karen Corr, Ewa Laurance, and Vivian Villareal, 4-0, to regain the lead. The 4-on-4 match that followed saw the complete dominance of Asia as they pummeled their counterparts, 4-1.
Sensing the urgency to win the next match, veteran Vivian Villareal took on Rubilen Amit in a singles match. With Villareal missing her shots, Amit simply pounced on here opponents miscues. Fittingly, Team Asia’s hardworking team captain pocketed the final 10-Ball to the delight of the hometown crowd that witnessed the epic battle between Asia and West. “If I lose this match, then the format allows the West to pick the singles matches for both teams next, so I knew that it could mean we will goto 9-9 for a 1 match decider for the event. So playing Vivian was like the finals. There was so much pressure it was crazy” says Amit.
