Ryan Costelo Steps Up as San Sebastian Draws Second Round Opener Loss to Letran

Pint-sized guard Ryan Costelo knocked down a layup inside the final 9 seconds to push San Sebastian College-Recoletos to an 89-87 win over previously undefeated Letran on Tuesday, in the NCAA Season 91 Men’s Basketball Division in the FilOil Flying V Arena, San Juan City.

Costelo dished 13 points, one of which was a pivotal clutch layup over Letran’s Kevin Racal and Jomari Sollano, to secure an 87-86 tally that proved to be the final nail in the coffin to undermine the Knights.

The Golden Stags now enjoy the bragging right of being the second team to succumb Coach Aldin Ayo’s Letran Knights after the first shocking loss given by the EAC Generals.

San Sebastian listed the big victory as its third in ten matches.

Alongside Costelo, Michael Calisaan led the Golden Stags with 27 points and 10 boards.

The Knights paced their usual momentum and reeled San Sebastian onset of the first period, but not until Coach Rodney Santos’ Golden Stags poised for another shocker to lure Letran.

San Sebastian sparked a 15-2 run inside the final minutes of the payoff round, but the Knights trimmed the gap through a Kevin Racal basket with just 16 seconds left on the clock.

Letran looked ahead for what seemed to be another win on its list, but Ryan Costelo saved the day and sent the tough layup to secure the prideful win for the Golden Stags.

In addition, Jamil Ortouste also had 19 points, while PBA-bound Bradwyn Guinto contributed 15 points for San Sebastian.

On the other hand, Mark Cruz, who was recently drafted by Purefoods Star in the PBA, led the Letran Knights with 30 points.

Rey Nambatac unloaded 12 kills, but missed on a potential three-pointer before the final buzzer rang that could have saved the Knights.
