Sam Betten repeats as Regent 5150 champ; Watkinson takes women’s title

Subic – Aussie Sam Betten and Kiwi Amelia Watkinson emerged victorious under the blistering heat of the Regent 5150 triathlon that started at Acea Beach and ended in Remy Field in Subic Bay Freeport Zone in Zambales.

The 28-year old Betten emerged first out the water ahead by only a minute and further stepped on the gas in the bike leg to break away from competition. Betten finished the 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run with an impressive time of 02:06:55. “I just had a good day out there today,” said Betten, who somehow was able to redeem himself after suffering his first DNF in his previous race.

Mitch Robins, who previously stayed in Subic for several months, suffered two flat tires that hurt his chances to catch up with Betten in the bike leg still was able to snatch second place with 02:21:27. “It’s a disaster but it happens” says Robins. Michal Bucek of Slovakia took third place honors with a time of 02:24:38 while Philippine-based Aussie Dan Brown was fourth with 02:28:05.

First time competitor in the Philippines Amelia Watkinson dominated the women’s pro division and finished second overall in the race besting Aussies Michelle Duffield and Dimity-Lee Duke with a time of 02:10:59. Duffield was a distant second with 02:22:03 while Dimity finished with 02:24:38.

The men’s Filipino Elite division went to a down-the-wire finish as Paul Jumamil was able to beat perennial contenders August Benedicto and Banjo Norte. Jumamil (02:19:08) also finished third overall in the Regent 5150 race as he edged out Benedicto (02:19:14) by only six seconds despite building a seemingly comfortable 4 minute lead going into the run leg. “Kung 11K siguro yun run baka nahabol ko” joked Benedicto after the race while he was attended to by medical staff. Last year’s champion Banjo Norte came in third with 02:20:28.

In the female Filipino Elite side, Maria Danielle Infantado bested Amale Jopson finishing with a time of 02:50:50.

The Regent 5150 is an olympic distance triathlon event and is organized by Sunrise Events Inc. in partnership with Regent Foods, the country’s leading snack manufacturing company.
