San Beda outplays Arellano, forces playoff for #1 spot in Final Four

Led by Javee Mocon, the San Beda Red Lions downed the Arellano University Chiefs, 91-81, in the last day of the elimination round of NCAA Season 92 and effectively forcing a playoff for the number one seed of the Final Four.

The Red Lions pulled away in the third period courtesy of Mocon, Davon Potts and AC Soberano to help post the biggest lead of the game at 16 points, 73-57, at the 2:30 mark of the quarter.

Arellano would close the gap to five points after a 14-4 capped by a Ken Salado steal and layup with 5:02 remaining to put the score at 81-76. It would be the closest the Chiefs could come.

The versatile forward Mocon finished with 19 crucial points, 15 rebounds and two steals while the swingman Potts had 18 points and three rebounds. Sharpshooter Soberano also chipped in with 15 points via four three pointers.

“I just dont want to lose this game. It’s Arellano eh, they’re the barometer,” said Mocon. “I just did everything I can do to contribute to the win.”

The San Beda victory forced a deciding game for the #1 spot in the Final Four between the two squads.

“Of course you want to get into the playoffs on a high note,” said San Beda head coah Jamike Jarin. “That’s enough motivation for us to play our hearts out again.”

Jiovanni Jalalon, despite an abysmal 5-of-23 shooting clip, led Arellano with 14 points, eight rebounds and eight assists while backourtmate Salado finished with 13 points, two rebounds and four steals. Bigman Lervin Flores also chipped in a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Both teams will play for the top spot on Tuesday, 4 pm again at the Filoil Flying V center in San Juan.
