San Beda survives Tankoua injury, fends off gritty EAC

After losing Donald Tankoua to a knee injury in the first quarter, the San Beda Red Lions survived an upset-minded Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 90-82, in the second round of elimination of NCAA Season 92 at the Filoil Flying V center in San Juan, Friday afternoon.

After leading by as much as 16 points in the first half, the Red Lions trailed heading into the fourth quarter, 67-66, after the Generals scored 30 points in the third period.

In the fourth period, San Beda regrouped and used a 9-2 rally to pull away capped by a Benedict Adamos layup to put the score at 78-71 with six minutes remaining. The Generals managed to cut the lead to three points with 1:05 to go after a Munsayac three-pointer but it would be the closest they could come as bad shot decisions and a turnover cost EAC the victory.

“Because of the injury of Donald Tankoua, everybody was just worried. Na-off balance din kami,” said San Beda head coach Mike Jarin of the his squad’s third quarter collapse. “Medyo scattered brains kami in the third quarter.

“If you look at the record of EAC, it doesn’t show how they’re really playing. They’re really playing well.” said Jarin.

Davon Potts paced the Red Lions with 21 points and six rebounds while Robert Bolick had an all-around game of eight points, seven rebounds and five assists. Rooke Benedict Adamos stepped up and also contributed with Tankoua’s absence as he had 11 crucial points and four rebounds.

For the Generals Sidney Onwubere led them with 19 points, 18 rebounds and five assists while Hamadou Laminou also had a double-double with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Francis Munsayac added 15 points and four assists.
