Led by Alvin Pasaol, the University of the East Red Warriors edged the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles, 72-71, in their first game of the 2017 Filoil Flying V Premier Cup, Wednesday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V center in San Juan.
After leading for most of the game, the Red Warriors saw their lead evaporate in the fourth quarter and even trailed after a a Raffy Verano layup with 46 seconds left, 70-71. A floater from rookie guard Mark Maloles, however, proved to be the game-winning basket with 36 seconds left. Ateneo had a chance to steal the lead back but a jumper from Tyler Tio and a putback by Chibueze Ikeh failed to go in.
Pasaol finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and four steals while the spitfire Maloles finished with 13 markers and eight boards.
For Ateneo, Mike Nieto tallied 15 points and eight boards while Thirdy Ravena was held to three points and three rebounds.
