University of the Philippines Lady Maroons finished the first round on high spirits as they dominate the National University Lady Bulldogs in straight sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20, in the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at San Juan Arena, March 2.
Isa Molde listed 13 points from 12 kills and one block, while Nicole Tiamzon also added another 13 points leading the Lady Maroons to the third seed with the record of 4-3.
The Lady Maroons overpowered NU early on the game, setting up a 7-point cushion on the first set, 23-16. The Lady Bulldogs tried to catch-up but a Jorelle Singh service error collapsed their efforts, halting the set at 25-19.
Spiking duo Marian Buitre and Diana Carlos led the attacks for UP on the second set to tear down NU’s defenses. Nabor sneaked in a point for the Lady Bulldogs following Molde’s feint, 24-21, but Tiamzon sunk the set-winning point to the back row, 25-21.
UP maintained their strong front to the third set, burying NU on a 22-17 lead. The Lady Bulldogs tried to retaliate but Jaja Santiago made a crucial attack error, 23-19. Singh scored the last point for NU followed by Bersola’s attack and a reception error to seal the match at 25-20.
Singh listed 16 markers for NU who experienced their third straight loss and dropped to 3-4.
