The UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament kicked off with host University of the Philippines opening the event with a three-set victory over the UE Lady Warriors, 25-20, 25-13, 25-21, yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Recto-based Lady Warriors were leading by a point in the opening period, 11-10, but UP was quick to form a run, converting the advantage to their side, 17-13. Lady Maroon Captain Kathy Bersola hit two straight points to widen the lead, and an error by Abil handed the set to UP, 25-20.
UP easily took control of the second set, kickstarting with a 5-1 score to keep the Lady Warriors trailing; a net violation committed by UE closed the set at 25-13 with UP still on the lead.
The Lady Maroons had 9 service aces compared to UE’s only 3, while scoring 38-of-120 in attacks against the Warriors’ 27-of-101.
The Lady Maroons were in a hurry to end the match as they keep the Warriors behind, 8-3, but a couple of miscommunication and errors trimmed the lead to one, 18-17. Justine Dorog led the breakaway with three-straight points while an ace by Bersola put the Maroons on matchpoint. A crucial serve done in error by Dana Disquitado threw in the towel to hand UP their first win of the season.
No one among the players scored double figures in the match, having UP’s Dorog, Tiamzon, and Carlos settle for 9 points each. While Shaya Adorador fought for the Warriors with 7 points, all from kills.
