Raining down explosive attacks, the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons shocked defending champions Ateneo Lady Eagles in 4 sets, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-22, in the UAAP Season 78 Women’s Volleyball Tournament at San Juan Arena, March 6.
Rookies Isa Molde and Diana Carlos led UP with 15 and 12 markers respectively while Nicole Tiamzon added another 12 points.
After a failed attempt in the first set, the Lady Maroons came more aggressively to snatch a big win against the powerful Lady Eagles, sending them to their second straight loss.
The Lady Maroons had a quick start, setting up an eight-point lead on the second set, 18-10. Ateneo managed to catch-up behind their tail at 23-22 however Carlos sealed the set with a kill after Ateneo’s net violation, 25-22.
UP stacked-up points early in the third set, building-up a five-point deficit, 14-9. The Lady Eagles are looking for a chance for a comeback but the Lady Maroons took advantage of their errors to bury Ateneo at 2-1 set advantage.
The fourth set continued with the Lady Maroons running away with the lead again at 20-15. Carlos and Tiamzon launched one attack after another while a crucial service error from Ateneo gave UP their free set point, 24-17.
The Lady Eagles are determined not to come down without a fight, desperately trying to extend the game with four straights, 24-22, however Molde hit the finishing kill to secure Lady Maroon’s solo third rank.
Alyssa Valdez recorded 19 points in a losing effort for Ateneo while Jhoana Maraguinot added 15 points.
