The University of Santo Tomas Tigresses earned their spot in the winning-column after putting a halt on their three-game losing skid at the expense of the Lady Warriors, 25-18, 25-8, 25-23, yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
UST Captain EJ Laure top-scored the match with 16 points from 13 attacks and three aces while fellow sophomore Cherry Rondina posted 12 points. On the other hand, UE’s Shaya Adorador had 10 markers, while Celine Domingo helped with 7.
In the skills department, UST outnumbered UE in attacks, 34 against 22; and had 11 service aces by the duo of Laure and Rondina over UE’s only 5. The errors by the Tigresses were limited to 16 while the opponent had 23.
The España-based squad were leading in the opening frame, but showed their dominance mainly in the second set after starting their double-digit lead, 16-6, from a Laure kill. The trampling continued with a 9-2 run to end the set at 25-8, with UST taking control of the first two sets.
The lead ensued with an 8-3 opening in the third frame, and when UST marked their 21st point, UE came charging back with a 9-3 run to stop the bleeding at 22-24. Only short of two points, UE was hopeful to snatch the lead from the Tigresses, but an unforced error gave the match to UST.
UST is now 1-3 and will battle the NU Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, while cellar-dwelling UE will face the DLSU Lady Archers on Sunday, both games will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena.
