MALAYSIA — More than a week after the national team pulled off an upset against Vietnam on Philippine soil during the 2017 Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships, the two teams faced off once again in the preliminary round of the Southeast Asian Games 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In their second meeting, the Vietnamese made sure to even the scorecard. On Friday, they defeated the Philippines in straight sets, 26-24, 25-12, 25-23.
After a close victory in the first set of the match, Vietnam went on full rampage to crush the confidence of the Philippines. Not only did they attack relentlessly all over the court, but they also forced the Philippine team to commit errors.
In the third frame, the Vietnamese squad also mounted a comeback after an early 1-7 lead by the Philippines. Tran Thi Thanh Thuy took charge of Vietnam’s explosive offense with 14 points in 10 attacks and three service aces. Skipper Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa also chipped in 11 points.
SEA Games veterans Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago carried the scoring load for the Philippines with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Philippines is set to face last year’s gold medalists Thailand in the semi-finals tomorrow at 10am.
